Little Updates from My Bear Cave

I recently published my Now page!

“What’s a Now page?” you may ask 🤔

Think of it as a more relevant and interesting version of an About page — inspired by nownownow.com

It’s basically a page where I keep an up-to-date list of the things I’m currently focusing on and what I’ve been doing lately.

My Indie Web Adventures

On one of my previous posts, I told you how I discovered BearBlog.dev

While exploring some of its users and their websites, I ended up discovering a bunch of other interesting websites too — including nownownow.com

Apparently, after creating your own Now page, you can even send an email to Derek Sivers, the person behind the website, and ask him to index your page there.

I haven’t done that yet… but maybe someday 👀

Building My Backup Site

If you visit my Now page, you’ll notice that I checked off one of my goals: Have a backup site for my BearBlog.

You may ask, “Why?”

Why would I need a backup website?

Hear me out.

Although BearBlog.dev is free, some of its features are not, so there are limitations on what you can do.

If you don’t know, I’m actually a web developer in real life — not just a blogger 😅

And just like Herman, the person behind BearBlog, I’ve tried a bunch of other blogging platforms before: WordPress, Blogspot, Tumblr, Wix, Medium, and many more.

Honestly, I was a blogger before I learned how to code.

And when I eventually learned how to build websites, I became obsessed with finding ways to create websites completely free — with no ads and no unnecessary clutter whatsoever.

I finally achieved that in 2023 🎉 when I discovered static site generators like Hugo and Hexo.

💡 Fun fact:
BearBlog actually has a Hugo theme version called Hugo-BearBlog!

So technically, with GitHub, Hugo, and the Hugo-BearBlog theme, I can create a BearBlog-style website completely from scratch.

No analytics. No unnecessary extras. Just simple blogging.

Not all of BearBlog.dev’s features are there, of course, but it’s definitely doable. I can manage 😌

If you want to see my backup site, you can visit atebear.pages.dev

There’s still a lot of work to do there, though. I’m still learning and slowly improving it little by little.

Slowly Expanding My Little Corner of The Internet

Aside from adding a Now page, I’m also planning to add a Guestbook in the future — maybe something like Guestbooks.meadow.cafe or LetterBird.co

Anyway, those are my current site updates for now.

God bless and Godspeed.

Adios! 🐻
